The Netrek community toyed with various enhancements before most
servers began validating clients to ensure a level playing field:
The simplest modification produces a client that merely shows
the user things they aren't supposed to be able to see: like
cloaked ships. They also concentrate information that the user
usually has to actively request. The human still completely
controls the ship.
These clients add the ability to automatically target torpedoes
and phasers. They also often include the ability to more
effectively dodge torpedoes or manage shields. The human still
directly controls all aspects navigation as well as non-combat
Finally we reach the fully autonomous robot. This is a program
that knows about the standard netrek programs and has some
rudimentary ability to make decisions about which program to
run. Bots include a command interface that allows a human to
override this decision process by typing imperative commands.
