SecureCRT HOW-TO SecureCRT has built-in support for Secure Shell (SSH) connectivity to remote machines, but defaults to open telnet (not secure/not encrypted) capability out-of-the-box. To enable SSH, upon starting the program: - From the Session List, create a new session (by clicking the New button) or edit an existing session (by highlighting the session in the Session List box) and click the Edit button - For the Name field, select any name you want to remember the host by - For Protocol, click the drop-down button to reveal several options, one of which is SSH. - Select SSH - For 'Hostname or IP' field, configure as needed to specify the machine you wish to connect to. - Port field should automatically show 22. This is the SSH port. - Username field should be configured as needed - Cipher may be almost any option, but should be set to 3DES - Authentication can remain Password (SSH will first initiate a secure connection with the remote host before you enter a password) - Leave Password field blank. You should NOT permit SecureCRT (or any other program requiring a password) to ever remember your password. Should anyone else obtain access to your computer, and you configure the program to remember your password, that other person can log into your remote account and behave as you. This is not good or safe. -Scott Ehrlich 9/15/99
